Oxmardyke

Oxmardyke Gate Box on the Hull - Selby line. A lovely example of a North Eastern Railway S1 Cabin.

The box at Oxmardyke dates from 1901 and is a North Eastern Railway S1 type of cabin. It was originally a block post but was down graded to a gate box in the early twenties. At this time Staddlethorpe (now GIlberdyke) has three signal boxes in the space less than half a mile - all with a huge array of levers and with the abilities to regulate between fast and slow lines.Since the abolition of Staddlethorpe East SB, the gate box lies in the section between Staddlethorpe (now Gilberdyke) and Broomfleet boxes.

Once the frame filled the box but since 1956 when a reconditioned McKenzie and Holland frame was installed of just sixteen levers and now it fills a third of the box. It retains a lovely gate wheel for operating the barriers.


Repeater instruments in the block circuits provide information for the crossing keeper as to the whereabouts of trains, along with a repeater bell so they here the various bell signals being sent between Gilberdyke and Broomfleet. They are listening out for either Train Entering Section or Train Approaching Section (the latter for Down non stopping trains through Gilberdyke) as their cue to drop the barriers and pull off on the appropriate road.

For a grade 1 job, they really earn their money, doing just as much work as a signalman for less money!

  1. That's a lovely 'box. I didn't know the UK used wheels to lower barriers these days. Didn't those crossings once have gates with a little motor on them, or was that another part of the UK.

    One thing Germany never managed was nice signal boxes. Stations, yes, but I've yet to find a signal box that doesn't liik out of proportion.

    1. There aren't many examples of gate wheels being reused with barriers, but there are two along the Hull mainline though, here and at Cave LC.

      You're thinking of 'Boom Gates', which were quite common in the old North Eastern Region area. I'm sure there's one set left in Yorkshire, but I can't remember where! There was a set at Hensall which closed a couple of years ago.

      However, the crossing was shut when I visited, ready for its new barriers just before the box's closure. Melton and Brough East on the Hull line both had Boom Gates, the ones at Brough were hated by most of the staff!

  2. Had the prilivage of visiting Oxmardyke box in 2010, while on a visit to see different types of level crossings with the former LOM for the area. Brilliant bit of engineering for raising and lowering the barriers. Was a great day out and saw more of the operational railway in work time than I ever have before or since! It would be great to work on the operational railway than stuck in the offices.

    1. We have quite a lot of crossings locally! So not a bad place to see a bit of variety - Oxmardyke is a lovely example.

      I spent all my time at GrantRail and VolkerRail trying to get out of offices and it's nice being on the front line, sometimes very hard work and you never know what could happen but it's a nice way of life. Well, until 2018 anyway.

  4. I know Tony - he's a really nice guy! Our folder of SLW forms at Gilberdyke still bears his handwriting!

    I'll be displaced from Gilberdyke upon resignalling - I'd like to get into the ROC, but it'll be such a change in working environments when compared with the boxes which it replaces.
